How Alabama taxes your paycheck
Alabama allows a deduction for federal income tax actually withheld from pay. Its payroll standard deduction falls as income rises, and the personal and dependent exemptions follow Form A-4.
The state withholding brackets range from 2% to 5%. Heads of family receive a larger personal exemption than single employees but use the single tax brackets.
| Item | 2026 withholding rule |
|---|---|
| Single/head-of-family brackets | 2% first $500; 4% next $2,500; 5% above $3,000 |
| Married brackets | 2% first $1,000; 4% next $5,000; 5% above $6,000 |
| Federal tax deduction | Actual federal income tax withheld |
| Standard deduction range | $2,500-$3,000 single; $5,000-$8,500 married; $2,500-$5,200 head of family |
