How Massachusetts taxes your paycheck
Massachusetts payroll withholding is normally 5%, with an additional 4% on annualized taxable wages above $1,107,750 in 2026. Circular M allows a deduction for employee Social Security and Medicare contributions, limited to $2,000 a year.
Form M-4 exemptions affect withholding separately from your federal filing status. Head-of-household and blindness adjustments use the amount specified for your pay frequency. Covered employees can pay up to 0.46% for the state Paid Family and Medical Leave program.
Schedule effective 2026-01-01. Annual totals project this schedule over a full year; they do not reconstruct earlier 2026 checks.

Common paycheck questions
Does Massachusetts have a flat income tax?
Most wage withholding is 5%. The 2026 payroll formula applies a total 9% above the inflation-adjusted $1,107,750 annualized threshold.
Does my 401(k) reduce Massachusetts withholding?
Qualifying traditional 401(k) deferrals generally reduce income-tax wages. PFML follows different wage rules and does not use that same income-tax deduction.
Why can Massachusetts withholding change during the year?
Circular M allows up to $2,000 of employee FICA deductions. Payroll stops that deduction once the yearly limit has been reached; this calculator displays a full-year average.
How accurate is this Massachusetts paycheck calculator?
It estimates regular wages using official 2026 withholding rules and the assumptions shown. Bonuses, multiple jobs, credits, employer plans and year-to-date pay can change actual checks. Compare the result with your pay stub and withholding certificates.
