How Virginia taxes your paycheck

Virginia payroll withholding uses four brackets from 2% through 5.75%. The employer formula subtracts a fixed $8,750 annual payroll deduction plus exemptions claimed on Form VA-4.

The payroll formula uses the same base deduction for single, married and head-of-household employees. A joint tax-return standard deduction is not automatically subtracted from each spouse's paycheck.

Does married status automatically double the Virginia payroll deduction?

No. The withholding formula uses $8,750 plus the exemptions claimed on Form VA-4, regardless of federal filing status.

What do the two exemption inputs mean?

Regular personal and dependent exemptions reduce annual wages by $930 each. Additional age or blindness exemptions reduce annual wages by $800 each.

How accurate is this Virginia paycheck calculator?

It estimates regular wages using official 2026 withholding rules and the assumptions shown. Bonuses, multiple jobs, credits, employer plans and year-to-date pay can change actual checks. Compare the result with your pay stub and withholding certificates.
