How Arizona taxes your paycheck

Arizona payroll withholding follows the percentage you select on Form A-4. The available positive rates run from 0.5% to 3.5% in half-point steps. The employer default is 2.0% when a new employee does not supply the form.

The percentage applies to gross taxable wages, generally the amount that will appear in federal W-2 Box 1 after qualifying pretax deductions. Arizona's 2.5% final income tax rate does not automatically set the percentage withheld from every paycheck.

Common paycheck questions

Is Arizona withholding always 2.5%?

No. A-4 lets employees choose a withholding percentage; 2.0% is the employer fallback if a new employee supplies no form.

Do pretax health premiums reduce the Arizona withholding base?

Qualifying pretax deductions generally reduce federal W-2 Box 1 wages, which the A-4 instructions use as the withholding wage base.
