How New York taxes your paycheck
New York wage withholding uses the 2026 NYS-50-T-NYS exact calculation method. These withholding schedules include adjustments that are different from simply applying income-tax-return brackets. A state allowance reduces annual wages used in the schedule by $1,000.
New York City resident tax and Yonkers tax are optional local deductions. The city tax uses its own withholding schedule. Yonkers residents owe a withholding surcharge equal to 16.75% of the state schedule amount, while people who work in Yonkers but live elsewhere use a separate 0.50% earnings-tax calculation with low-income exclusions.
For covered employment, 2026 Paid Family Leave contributions are 0.432% of gross wages, capped at $411.91 annually. Employers may also collect statutory disability contributions at 0.50% of wages, limited to $0.60 per week. The calculator assumes both maximum employee deductions apply unless you select an exemption.
Schedule effective 2026-01-01. Annual totals project this schedule over a full year; they do not reconstruct earlier 2026 checks.

Common paycheck questions
Does working in New York City automatically create city resident tax?
This calculator adds NYC tax only when you select NYC resident. A work address alone is not the same as city residence.
How much is New York Paid Family Leave in 2026?
The standard employee contribution is 0.432% of gross pay per period, with a $411.91 annual maximum.
How is Yonkers tax handled?
Yonkers resident withholding is 16.75% of the computed state schedule amount. Nonresidents earning wages in Yonkers use a separate 0.50% earnings tax with exclusions at low annual pay.
Why does head of household use the single state withholding table?
The New York IT-2104 certificate combines Single and Head of household. Eligible single-job heads of household can claim extra allowances on that form; enter your actual certificate allowances here.
How accurate is this New York paycheck calculator?
It estimates regular wages using official 2026 withholding rules and the assumptions shown. Bonuses, multiple jobs, credits, employer plans and year-to-date pay can change actual checks. Compare the result with your pay stub and withholding certificates.
