How Wisconsin taxes your paycheck
Wisconsin uses the authorized alternate withholding method in Publication W-166, revised January 2026. It annualizes wages, applies a shrinking deduction and subtracts $400 for each WT-4 exemption.
The deduction starts at $6,702 for single employees and $9,461 for married employees, then phases out as pay rises. Head of household uses the single withholding category.
The payroll schedule has 3.54%, 4.65%, 5.30% and 7.65% segments. These withholding figures differ from the brackets used on a final Wisconsin income-tax return.
Schedule effective 2026-01-01. Annual totals project this schedule over a full year; they do not reconstruct earlier 2026 checks.
| Annual net wage after deduction/exemptions | Withholding formula |
|---|---|
| Up to $12,760 | 3.54% |
| $12,760 to $25,520 | $451.70 + 4.65% of excess |
| $25,520 to $280,950 | $1,045.04 + 5.30% of excess |
| Over $280,950 | $14,582.83 + 7.65% of excess |
These are employee payroll withholding rules. Your final income tax return may use different deductions, credits or rates.

Common paycheck questions
Why do the withholding rates differ from Wisconsin income-tax rates?
The state publishes a separate payroll withholding schedule. This estimate follows that schedule rather than substituting tax-return brackets.
What does one WT-4 exemption do?
It removes $400 from annual wages after the alternate-method deduction.
How accurate is this Wisconsin paycheck calculator?
It estimates regular wages using official 2026 withholding rules and the assumptions shown. Bonuses, multiple jobs, credits, employer plans and year-to-date pay can change actual checks. Compare the result with your pay stub and withholding certificates.
