How Illinois taxes your paycheck

Illinois withholds state income tax at 4.95% after allowances recorded on Form IL-W-4. For 2026, each Line 1 allowance removes $2,925 of annual wages from the withholding calculation. Each Line 2 allowance removes a further $1,000.

Filing status alone does not determine the Illinois allowance count. This calculator starts with one Line 1 allowance and zero Line 2 allowances; change these to match your signed IL-W-4.

Common paycheck questions

Why does my Illinois withholding differ from a simple 4.95% calculation?

IL-W-4 allowances reduce the wage base before the percentage is applied.

Does a married filing status automatically mean two Illinois allowances?

No. Enter the allowance counts on your IL-W-4; federal filing status does not replace that form.

How accurate is this Illinois paycheck calculator?

It estimates regular wages using official 2026 withholding rules and the assumptions shown. Bonuses, multiple jobs, credits, employer plans and year-to-date pay can change actual checks. Compare the result with your pay stub and withholding certificates.

Are my salary details stored?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. Your entries are not sent to a calculation server, saved to local storage or used for advertising.
