How Iowa taxes your paycheck

Iowa applies a 3.8% withholding rate after a payroll deduction. For 2026, the annual equivalents are $13,000 for single workers or married couples with two earners, $19,500 for heads of household, and $26,000 for married couples with only one earner.

The allowance amount on a 2024-or-later IA W-4 is a dollar amount subtracted from annual withholding, not a count of personal exemptions. Enter the amount from your IA W-4.

Common paycheck questions

Should I enter an allowance count or a dollar amount?

For a 2024-or-later IA W-4, enter the total allowance dollar amount. Do not enter an old allowance count as if it were dollars.

What if both spouses work?

Select that the spouse also has earned income. The official formula then uses the same payroll deduction as the Other filing-status column.

How accurate is this Iowa paycheck calculator?

It estimates regular wages using official 2026 withholding rules and the assumptions shown. Bonuses, multiple jobs, credits, employer plans and year-to-date pay can change actual checks. Compare the result with your pay stub and withholding certificates.
