How Mississippi taxes your paycheck

Mississippi uses a 4% withholding rate after the annual exemption, the payroll standard deduction and a $10,000 zero-rate amount. Its official 2026 computer payroll flowchart rounds each paycheck withholding to a whole dollar.

The state exemption comes from Form 89-350. The head-of-household amount already includes the qualifying dependent, while spouses with two incomes must coordinate their share of the married exemption.

Common paycheck questions

Why does Mississippi ask for a separate exemption amount?

The state uses Form 89-350 rather than federal W-4 credits. Dependents and the way spouses divide exemptions can change state withholding.

Does head of household get another automatic dependent exemption?

The default $9,500 head-of-household exemption already includes the qualifying dependent. Use the amount on your state certificate instead of counting that dependent again.

How accurate is this Mississippi paycheck calculator?

It estimates regular wages using official 2026 withholding rules and the assumptions shown. Bonuses, multiple jobs, credits, employer plans and year-to-date pay can change actual checks. Compare the result with your pay stub and withholding certificates.
