How Alaska taxes your paycheck

Alaska has no personal state income tax, but it does require a worker contribution to unemployment insurance for covered employment. In 2026 the employee rate is 0.50% on the first $54,200 of reportable wages, for a maximum of $271.

Alaska unemployment wages exclude qualified retirement-plan contributions and qualifying Section 125 health-insurance deductions. That differs from Social Security wages, so this calculator keeps the Alaska unemployment tax base separate.

The result spreads the estimated annual unemployment contribution across the selected pay frequency. An actual paycheck can have a larger deduction early in the year and none once the annual wage base is reached.

Schedule effective 2026-01-01. Annual totals project this schedule over a full year; they do not reconstruct earlier 2026 checks.

Common paycheck questions

Why is there an Alaska deduction if the state has no income tax?

Covered employees fund part of unemployment insurance. The 2026 worker contribution is 0.50%, capped at $271 for the year.

Does a 401(k) contribution reduce Alaska unemployment tax?

Qualified retirement contributions are excluded from Alaska reportable UI wages. This can lower the deduction when annual UI wages are below $54,200.

Why did unemployment tax stop on my paycheck?

With one employer, the 2026 contribution stops when reportable wages reach $54,200. This calculator displays the full-year average across all checks.

How accurate is this Alaska paycheck calculator?

It estimates regular wages using official 2026 withholding rules and the assumptions shown. Bonuses, multiple jobs, credits, employer plans and year-to-date pay can change actual checks. Compare the result with your pay stub and withholding certificates.
